Ukraine is subdivided into 27 regions as you can see in Ukraine regions map: 24 oblasts, one autonomous republic, and two "cities with special status". The administrative division in Ukraine was directly inherited from the local republican administration of the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and has not changed majorly since the middle of 20th century. It is somewhat complex as beside having couple of levels of a territorial subdivision, it also has its own classification for various settlements. The Autonomous Republic of Crimea, formerly the Crimean Oblast of the Ukrainian SSR, is geographically encompasses the major portion of Crimean peninsula in the south of Ukraine. The capital of the republic is the city of Simferopol. The autonomous republic is the only region within Ukraine that possesses its own Constitution.

The capital of the republic is the city of Simferopol. The autonomous republic is the only region within Ukraine that possesses its own Constitution. Oblasts are the major and the most common administrative division in the country and the term is often interchangeably used with the term "region." Almost every oblast is named after its administrative center, while the two that are not are named after their historical regions. There are two cities that carry a special status: the city of Kiev which is the capital, and the city of Sevastopol that carries exclusive rights that Ukraine handed over to Russia (Black Sea Fleet) in spite of the Constitution of Ukraine.
Due to geopolitical, historical, and cultural factors, there are semi-official nominations to a certain region in Ukraine. Ukraine regions map shows the broad sense of particular regions. The terms West, East, South and Central Ukraine are often used. There is no clear description on what includes/excludes one region or another, but rather a general reference. Here is a list of what constitutes such nominations: Western Ukraine, may mean either the historic region of Galicia, or may also include Volhynia, Podolia, Transcarpathia, and/or Bukovina as its mentioned in Ukraine regions map. Eastern Ukraine may mean either the Don basin, Sloboda Ukraine, continental Taurida regions etc. South Ukraine is often includes the whole Taurida, the Kryvyi Rih basin, and the regions of Mykolayiv and Odessa oblasts. Alternatively it may include the Don basin, in particularly the adjacent land to the Azov Sea. Central Ukraine is more vague term and often denotes what is not included in Western or South-Eastern definitions.

Ukraine is a multi-party republic with a semi-presidential system as you can see in Ukraine political map. Executive power is exercised by the Cabinet headed by a Prime Minister, while legislative power is vested in Parliament. The President is elected by universal suffrage for a five-year term. He appoints the Prime Minister, who must be approved by Parliament. The parliament (Verkhovna Rada) is composed of a single chamber, with 450 members elected for four years by proportional representation (following the 2004 amendments, the deputies elected in 2007 are elected for five years). The parliament prepares laws, ratifies international treaties and approves the budget, among other things. The President of the Rada is the second highest ranking state official after the President of the Republic and before the Prime Minister.
Since the 2007 parliamentary elections, five parties or coalitions of political parties are present in the parliament, the Rada. Our Ukraine is a political party born from the merger of several other parties. Its leader is the former Ukrainian president, Viktor Yushchenko as its shown in Ukraine political map. The party received 14% of the vote in the last parliamentary elections in 2007. The Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc is a liberal political party, born from the merger of several political parties. Its current leader is Yulia Tymoshenko. It is the main opposition party in the Rada. The party received almost 31% of the vote in the last parliamentary elections in 2007. The Party of Regions is the main party in the Rada. Its electorate is mainly Russian-speaking (in the east of the country). Its current leader is Mykola Azarov, since President Viktor Yanukovych was inaugurated. The party received 34% of the vote in the 2007 parliamentary elections.
While the presidency was held by Leonid Kuchma, a former Communist Party apparatchik, considered corrupt and linked to mafia groups, the last presidential election took place on 31 October and 21 November 2004 as its mentioned in Ukraine political map. Following suspicions of fraud and popular pressure, more or less spontaneous, from the Orange Revolution, the Supreme Court annulled the result of the second round, which gave former Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych the victory over Viktor Yushchenko. The subsequent parliamentary elections took place on 26 March 2006. The results were as follows: the Party of Regions of the pro-Russian Viktor Yanukovych obtained 32.12% of the vote (186 elected); Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (BUT) - 22.27% of the vote (129 elected); the Presidential Party Our Ukraine - 13.94% of the vote (81 elected); The Socialist Party - 5.67% (33 elected); the Communist Party - 3.66% of the vote (21 elected). Parties that failed to obtain a minimum of 3% of the vote are not represented in the Rada.
